How to Donate Car to Charity in California

How to Donate Car to Charity in California

The car donation process is simple: Call the charity and someone will come and pick up your vehicle, or tell you where to bring it. However, with so many charities to choose from and so many people trying to scam the innocent, picking the right organization is not always easy.
Following is brief tutorial about donating cars in California and rest of the United States.

What to Do First

Before you donate your car to charity, the IRS advises that you:
  • Research the charity.
  • See if you will receive a tax benefit for your donation.
  • Look up the value of your car (however, you can only deduct the actual amount the charity sells your car for).
  • Ask if you, as a donor, have any other responsibilities.
In addition, you may want to consider:
  • How will your car be used?
  • Will the money from the sale of your car be used locally or outside of your community?
  • Which programs or services within the charity will receive funding from the sale?
  • What is the efficiency rating of the charity? (A lower rating means more of your donation goes toward administrative costs, not to the programs and services you want to support.)
For more information on this and tax-related matters, read the IRS's A Donor's Guide to Vehicle Donations.

Finding a Charity

Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details, which may help you make informed donating decisions. Be sure to visit the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area, if you are interested in local charities. Or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.

Tax Write-Off

The IRS has clamped down on how much you can write off on donated cars. No longer can you submit a vehicle's full value. Now, instead, you can only claim the amount for which it is sold. For example, if your vehicle has a Blue Book value of $1,600, but the charity only sells it for $725, you must submit the lower deduction.
Your charity must give you a deduction amount within 30 days of handing your car over, or, if it applies, within 30 days of it being sold. If you're not notified within this time span, call your charity. The amount will come in the form of a mailed letter. Use this as your receipt, or what the IRS calls your acknowledgment.
If the deduction exceeds the IRS's normal $500 limit, your acknowledgment must contain the following information:
  • Your name and taxpayer identification number.
  • The vehicle identification number.
  • The date of the contribution.
  • And one of the following:
    • ―A charity statement verifying that no goods or services were provided in return for your car donation.
    • ―A description and estimate of the value of goods or services, if any, exchanged for your donation.
    • ―A statement that goods and services provided by the charity consisted entirely of intangible religious benefits (if applicable).

Where to Donate Your Car

The choice is yours. But before donating your car, confirm that your charity of choice is recognized by the IRS. Otherwise, your deduction will be rejected. If in doubt, check the IRS's Publication 78. It lists qualified charities; religious organizations aren't listed, though they do qualify. Or, either contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) in your area or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.
If you're still undecided, Forbes ranks America's 200 Largest Charities and, in some cases, discloses their financial details. Keep in mind, however, that not every charity listed here accepts car donations.

How to Cancel Plates and Tags

The laws for this vary by state. Some states require surrendering the vehicle's license plates to the DMV. Others require submitting a sold notice. And there are a few states that require no formal notification at all.
Check with your DMV for requirements.

Women's Cheap Car Insurance in U.K

The decision by the European Court of Justice to ban the consideration of gender when calculating insurance premiums has been seen by some people as a victory against discrimination This made car insurance for women cheap. It is indeed a fact that on average, and I stress the terms 'on average', male drivers, particularly young ones, drive faster and more aggressively than females, and therefore have more accidents, and worse accidents, which means they the insurance companies have to pay out far more (and bigger) claims for their male clients. Psychiatrists have put forward theories that men are more naturally aggressive than women because of the way their brains are wired, and consequently it is only to be expected that they will drive in a more forceful way. I couldn't possibly comment on that.
Another thing to bear in mind is that on average premiums for females over the age of 60 were usually even higher than they are for males, everything else being equal! The justification that insurance companies have put forward for this anomaly is that a great number of ladies only drive a great deal after they have retired, because their husbands or some other males have done most of the driving for them in the past. How an attitude like this would be up to close scrutiny is debatable, but that is by the by; the fact is that it should now be illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against women in this age group.
Does this, then, mean that although ladies of retiring age may see a drop in premiums, younger female drivers will see insurance prices spiralling out of control, to the level of that charged to an average boy racer? This is not something that the insurance industry wishes to see happen, and they will now be looking carefully at their figures to see if there are ways of limiting or indeed cancelling out the effect of this ruling on premiums. What has to be borne in mind however is that whether we are born male or female is only one of the factors that car insurers use in assessing our risk factors when we get behind the wheel; of greater importance is our accident record (or, hopefully, lack of one), whether or not we have had convictions for motoring offences, our age, where the car is parked, and a whole host of other criteria. For this reason the best advice anyone can give any driver, whether male or female, young or old, novice or advanced, is to shop around. And the easiest way to do that is by using a good car insurance price comparison engine.
It has to be remembered of course that price is not the only consideration; and there have been a lot of criticisms of price comparison websites recently because it has been claimed that they encourage motorists to accept the lowest price, rather than the policy which benefits them the most. It is very important to bear in mind that every policy is different from every other one, and you may wish to look very carefully at the so-called 'small print' to make sure that a policy gives all the protection that you need, and as little as possible of the gimmicks that you may not need. Cover for a handbag and its contents may be extremely useful; but if that cover comes at a substantial price or masks other benefits which are missing and limited then it may not be such a bargain after all.
